A water softener is a system that removes minerals (mainly calcium and magnesium) from your water through a process called "ion exchange."
Think of it like a filter that catches the minerals causing problems in your water and replaces them with tiny amounts of sodium. The result is "soft water" that doesn't leave deposits, scale buildup, or that film you see on dishes and shower doors.
The system has two tanks: one filled with resin beads that grab the minerals, and one filled with salt that regenerates the beads when they're full. It runs automatically - you just add salt every month or so.
-
If you have 2 or more of these signs, you have hard water:
✓ White crusty buildup on faucets, showerheads, or around drains
✓ Spots on dishes even after running the dishwasher
✓ Soap doesn't lather well - takes forever to get suds
✓ Cloudy shower doors with a film that won't come off
✓ Dry, itchy skin after showering
✓ Dull, lifeless hair no matter what products you use
✓ Stiff, scratchy towels and clothes after washing
✓ Reduced water pressure over time
✓ Appliances breaking down earlier than expectedThe only way to know for sure is to test your water. We offer free on-site testing that measures exact hardness levels and tells you exactly what's in your water.
-
Primary removal:
Calcium - The #1 cause of scale and white buildup
Magnesium - Works with calcium to create hard water problems
Iron (up to 3-5 ppm) - Causes orange/brown stains
Manganese (small amounts) - Causes black staining
Important: What softeners DON'T remove:
Chlorine - Needs a carbon filter (we can add this)
Bacteria - Needs UV sterilization (for well water)
Heavy metals - Needs reverse osmosis system
Dissolved solids - Needs reverse osmosis system
For complete treatment, most homes need a softener (removes hardness) + carbon filter (removes chlorine/taste) + RO system at kitchen sink (perfect drinking water).
-
This is the #1 concern we hear, and it's a good question.
The short answer: No, you won't miss them.
Here's why:
You get 95%+ of your calcium and magnesium from food, not water
One glass of milk has more calcium than 10 gallons of hard water
One handful of almonds has more magnesium than 20 gallons of hard water
You'd need to drink 15-20 glasses of water daily to get meaningful minerals from it
Meanwhile, those same minerals are:
Costing you $1,500+ per year in waste and damage
Destroying your appliances years early
Drying out your skin and hair
Clogging your pipes
The minerals in your water are causing problems, not providing nutrition. Your diet provides all the calcium and magnesium you need.

Based on 30 years of installations across Ontario, here's what our customers typically save:
Annual savings:
Soap, shampoo, detergent: $140-240 (use 50% less)
Energy bills: $80-180 (water heater runs 20-30% more efficiently)
Appliance replacement: $1,100 (appliances last 30-50% longer)
Plumbing repairs: $100-200 (no scale clogs or buildup)
Total: $1,420-1,720 per year
Over 10 years: $14,200-17,200 in savings
Over the 20-year life of the softener: $28,400-34,400
Every home is different, but we've never had a customer tell us it wasn't worth it.
-
Typical installation: 3-5 hours for a standard home.
We'll:
Install the softener near your water main
Connect to your existing plumbing
Set up the bypass valve
Program the system for your specific water
Test everything thoroughly
Show you how it works and how to add salt
Clean up completely (we have a No-Mess Promise)
You can use your water the same day. Most customers are amazed how fast and clean the process is.
-
Usually in your:
Basement near the water main (most common)
Utility room or mechanical room
Garage if that's where your water comes in
Crawl space (less common, but possible)
The system needs to be:
Close to where water enters your home
Near a drain for discharge water
Accessible for adding salt
Protected from freezing
We'll assess your home during the free consultation and recommend the best location.
-
Most homes: every 4-8 weeks, depending on:
Your water hardness level
How much water you use
Size of your family
The process is simple:
Check the salt level in the brine tank (takes 10 seconds)
When it's 1/4 full, add a bag or two of salt
That's it
Each bag costs $5-8. You can buy them at any hardware store or we can deliver them to you.
Pro tip: Set a phone reminder to check monthly. Once you get in the habit, it's as automatic as taking out the trash.
-
Minimal. Water softeners are very low-maintenance.
Your part:
Add salt every 4-8 weeks
Occasionally check that salt isn't bridged (forming a dome)
Keep area around system clean
Our part (annual service):
Check resin bed condition
Test water hardness (ensure system is working)
Clean injector and valves
Inspect for any wear or leaks
Adjust settings if needed
Annual service costs $100-150 and ensures your system lasts 20+ years.
Most customers go on autopilot after the first year - it just works.
-
15-25 years with proper maintenance.
The tank itself can last 20-30 years. The resin bed typically lasts 10-15 years (replaceable for $300-500). The control valve is the most likely part to need replacement eventually.
Compare that to appliances hard water destroys:
Water heater: 8 years with hard water vs 12-15 with soft water
Dishwasher: 7 years vs 10-12 years
Washing machine: 8 years vs 12-14 years
Your softener protects appliances worth $3,000-5,000. It pays for itself many times over.
-
Yes, dramatically for most people.
Here's what happens:
Hard water minerals leave a film on your skin that blocks natural oils
This film prevents moisture from absorbing and irritates sensitive skin
It's especially problematic for eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis
With soft water:
No mineral film means your skin can breathe
Natural oils aren't blocked
Moisturizers actually absorb instead of sitting on top
Many people report significant improvement in skin conditions within weeks
We've had customers tell us:
"My son's eczema cleared up for the first time in years"
"I don't need prescription creams anymore"
"My skin feels like I'm at a spa every day"
"No more itching at night"
Research backs this up - hard water is a documented risk factor for eczema development, especially in children.
Note: Results vary by individual, but we see skin improvements in 70-80% of customers with dry or sensitive skin.
-
Because you're finally actually clean.
Here's what's happening:
With hard water, minerals create a film on your skin that feels "squeaky"
You've been conditioned to think that squeaky feeling = clean
But it's actually mineral residue preventing your natural oils from working
With soft water:
No mineral film
Soap rinses completely clean
Your skin's natural oils can do their job
That "slippery" feeling is what CLEAN actually feels like
Everyone notices it at first. Within a week or two, soft water feels completely normal (and way better). You'll wonder how you ever tolerated that film on your skin.
Fun test: Go to a hotel with soft water. Your shower will feel slippery. That's not the hotel's water being weird - your home water is the problem.
-
Yes, noticeably.
Hard water does serious damage to hair:
Minerals coat each strand, preventing moisture absorption
Your hair can't retain its natural oils
Shampoo doesn't rinse clean, leaving residue
Hair feels both greasy AND dry
Color fades faster as minerals strip it
Hair breaks more easily
With soft water:
Hair is shinier and softer within days
Much more manageable (less frizz)
Color lasts 30-40% longer
You use LESS shampoo and it works better
Natural oils can reach your hair
Professional-looking results at home
Stylists tell us: They can tell when someone has soft water by looking at their hair. It's that noticeable.
Many customers say: "My hair looks like I just left the salon - every day."
-
No, it should actually improve it over time.
Here's why:
Water softeners don't restrict flow (proper sizing is key)
In fact, they REMOVE the scale that's restricting your pipes
Over months, your water pressure often INCREASES as scale dissolves
If you have low pressure now: It's likely because hard water has clogged your pipes with scale. A softener will gradually dissolve that buildup and restore flow.
Important: We size systems properly for your home's flow rate. An undersized system could cause pressure issues, but a professionally installed system won't.
-
Yes, it's perfectly safe.
The sodium added is minimal (20-40mg per glass) and not a health concern for most people.
That said, many people prefer:
A dedicated cold water line to the kitchen sink (bypasses softener for drinking/cooking)
A reverse osmosis system under the kitchen sink (removes everything for perfect drinking water)
We typically recommend:
Soften ALL water (for appliances, showers, laundry)
Add RO at kitchen sink for drinking/cooking
This gives you the best of both worlds
Your drinking water will be safe either way - it's just a preference.
-
Yes to all.
Water softeners work with:
✓ Tank water heaters (gas or electric)
✓ Tankless water heaters (actually EXTENDS their life significantly)
✓ Well water
✓ City/municipal water
✓ Lake water (with additional treatment)
✓ Any plumbing system
Special cases:
Well water: May need additional treatment (iron filter, UV sterilization, pH adjustment)
Tankless heaters: ESPECIALLY benefit from soft water (scale is their #1 enemy)
Lake water: Needs more comprehensive treatment, but softener is part of the system
We assess your specific situation during the free consultation and design a system that works for YOUR water and YOUR home.

-
You can, but here's what you're trading:
Big Box Store / Online:
✅ Possibly lower upfront price ($500-1,000 less sometimes)
❌ DIY installation (most people aren't plumbers)
❌ Incorrect sizing (generic, not customized to your water)
❌ No local service (good luck finding someone to fix it)
❌ Warranty issues (corporate customer service runaround)
❌ One-size-fits-all system (may not address your specific water issues)
Professional Installation (Pure Water Services):
✅ Properly sized for YOUR water and household
✅ Professional installation (no leaks, no mistakes)
✅ Guaranteed to work correctly
✅ Local service and support for 20+ years
✅ Warranties we actually honor
✅ Custom solutions for YOUR specific water problems
The DIY disasters we fix:
Undersized systems that can't keep up with demand
Improperly installed valves causing flooding
Systems that don't regenerate correctly
Wrong resin type for water chemistry
Voided warranties from DIY install
Here's our honest take: If you're very handy AND have simple water (just hardness, no iron or other issues) AND willing to risk it, you can save some money DIY.
But for most homeowners: The peace of mind, proper sizing, professional installation, and local support are worth the difference. Plus our financing makes the monthly cost almost identical to DIY.
We've installed 1,000+ systems. We've seen every possible issue. That experience is valuable.
